WEEKEND

2–3 Mar (Sat–Sun)
Shouson Theatre, HK Arts Centre

Let the music of Catalonia transport you to Barcelona

This is a special weekend of concerts featuring a diverse range of musicians connected to the cosmopolitan Catalan city of Barcelona. Renowned for the cultural openness of its hip, appreciative audiences, the city’s multi-faceted world music scene attracts performers inspired by the folk traditions of the Iberian Peninsula, its islands, and the sounds of Africa, South America and beyond. All come together to provide a Mediterranean soundscape that could only have been created in one of Europe’s most culturally vibrant cities.

Criatures is a duo of diatonic button accordionist Marçal Ramon and Ivó Jordà, a master of the gralla, a traditional Catalan double-reed woodwind instrument.

Known for the almost telepathic empathy of their performances, which combine the traditions of Mediterranean folk music with the intimacy and finesse of chamber music, they won First Prize in the 2016 Sounds of the Mediterranean contest.

Belda & Sanjosex was formed by diatonic accordionist Carles Belda and the lead singer of Barcelona rock band Sanjosex, Carles Sanjosé, for their Càntut project, performing modern interpretations of traditional folk music of Northern Catalonia.

The project was derived from the work of musicologist Albert Massip, who compiled more than a thousand recordings of popular songs from the northern area of Catalonia, where the Pyrenees range meet the Mediterranean Sea. All these songs were sung by old men and women who had kept them throughout the years.

Belda & Sanjosex’s research into Massip’s database culminated in the album Càntut, hailed as the Best Catalan Folk Album of 2016 and listed in the Top 20 of the European World Music charts. By performing the Càntut repertoire, the band is preserving and reinvigorating songs which had survived and evolved across the centuries purely through oral transmission.

Yexza Lara Trio

2 Mar  |  8:00pm

The trio of Venezuelan Yexza Lara will perform music from her album Camino, inspired by the Afro-Venezuelan and Brazilian music with which she grew up. Her compositions evoke the landscapes of Tenerife—where she lives when not performing in Barcelona or overseas—and Bolivia.

For this concert Lara will perform her beautiful and rhythmically sophisticated compositions with alto flautist Pablo Selnik and guitarist Octavio Hernández.

Jorge da Rocha Trio

3 Mar  |  8:00pm

“His originality and sensitivity fill each song he creates with charm”
— Le Cool

For this trio concert, Jorge da Rocha will perform primarily original compositions from his 2017 album To Drop and Let Go, first recorded as an intimate dialogue between double bass and voice.

This performance develops the music further into a fascinating three-way musical conversation between da Rocha, flautist Yexza Lara and cellist Ana Conceição. The additional players contribute contrasting textures and their own distinctive instrumental signatures to his deeply emotional and restlessly exploratory music.
